“Huddled Masses: Immigrants Who Fight Deportation Are Packed Into Federal Gulags for Months and Years Before Their Cases are Heard”
Gregory Pratt and I worked together at the BGA on the High Costs of Wrongful Convictions. Greg now writes on the plight of immigrants in Arizona. In the Pinal County jail, serving as a federal contractor, immigrants are held tighter than charged murders and rapists. They are not allowed visitors. They are not allowed outside. They are held for years waiting to be deported or released.
When asked if the men are allowed outside, one ICE official comments, “This is considered covered-enclosed outdoor recreation.” That’s right. According to the Feds, being inside counts as going outside.
It worries me that those who came to the US to work are being watched more critically and held more securely than violent criminals.
I see Big Star there a lot. I approve.
Wrongful convictions of men and women for violent crimes in Illinois have cost taxpayers $214 million and have imprisoned innocent people for 926 years, according to a seven-month investigation by the Better Government Association and the Center on Wrongful Convictions.
Almost a thousand years behind bars while the real perpetrators were free.
